Moss as a Design Element
Moss walls have been used for centuries in Europe and today, moss walls are re-entering the spotlight as an environmentally friendly way to improve air quality, reduce energy costs and bring nature back into the human landscape. In September 2017, The Fat Plant Society started working on a moss wall for Hogshead KC, a local Kansas City restaurant and completed the nearly 30-foot moss wall in December 2017 when HogsheadKC opened their doors on the Country Club Plaza. Intrepid Creative and Bradán, LLC have been developing a video to show the progress along the way. Visit The Fat Plant Society blog page for photos and an interview with Restauranteur, Shawn McClenny.
Moss is ideal for those who want to have their green wall without any maintenance or water use at all, and The Fat Plant Society builds each moss wall to spec and for optimum visual appeal. Real moss and ferns, sustainably harvested from farms and ranches, are preserved using non-toxic food-grade ingredients and arranged onto frames made out of reclaimed hardwoods such as cherry wood. Since they are preserved, the moss does not require heavy dirt, does not require water, nor do they put out pollen or spores. The Fat Plant Society uses light as air backing material on panels for easy installation and the result is an ever-green artwork -- a "plant painting" -- that looks stunning and requires no maintenance whatsoever.
